The Future is Mammoth

If you’ve used our toilets and welfare units you’ll know the future for events and building projects is better with a mammoth, but did you know mammoths have been in Reading longer than people?

Reading Bricks

If you walk around Reading you can’t help to see the beautiful fancy bricks that make up most of the old buildings in the town. It’s part of the identity of Reading. These were made locally using clay, which produces a good red brick, and chalk which when mixed with the clay produces a nice grey brick. The Victorian builders that built the town were experts at creating amazing patterns on the facades of the houses and shops with these locally produced bricks, so there was a high demand for the clay and chalk they needed to make more.

Mammoth Discovery

‘What does this have to do with ancient mammoths?’ I hear you ask…Well as this brick making work was done by hand the labourers often came across fossils in the clay. A mammoth jaw bone was discovered at Grovelands brick and tile pit at Elm Park, Reading, and was sent to the museum, where it has been ever since. I would love to have been there when it was found in the clay! It’s amazing to think of woolly mammoths roaming around our town, These days you can spot a mammoth on a lot of streets and events, these are slightly smaller than the originals, but more useful if you need the bathroom!
